Before the sirens, there’s you
When someone calls London Fire Brigade, it’s Control who answer. They may be reporting a fire, flood, road traffic collision or another incident. Callers are often distressed, panicked or disoriented, but Control gather the information needed to mobilise and assist crews. They can also provide lifesaving advice while firefighters are on their way. To keep London covered 24/7, 365 days a year, Control staff work a rolling three-day shift pattern, including night shifts.

In our Control room, you’ll hear people that are confused, scared and panicked. You will be
the guiding voice that helps them to safety and mobilises crews to their rescue. It’s not an
easy role – and being prepared for it isn’t a quick process. We want you to be sure this is
|the right career for you.

If successful, you’ll be invited to an interview where we’ll work out if you’re suited to the role.

Your Eligibility

When applying, you must:

Have the right to work in the UK.
Be able to pass the relevant pre-employment checks and vetting requirements.
Be willing to work a shift pattern, including nights, weekends and public holidays.

After you’ve taken the drill, you’ll be invited to register for a firefighter readiness day.
You’ll go to a fire station and speak with members of our brigade – to help determine if this role is
for you.

When applying, you must:

Be at least 17-and-a-half years old. There is no upper age limit.  
Be a UK or EU citizen, or a permanent UK resident with no work restrictions.

Have a full UK or EU driving licence, manual or automatic. (Visit the GOV.UK driving licence page).

Be free from unspent criminal convictions.

After joining, you must:

Get an LGV driving licence with 12 months of joining.

Be prepared to be clean shaven to safely wear breathing apparatus.
